Product Information

Sodium Metabisulfite is an inorganic compound that can be viewed as the condensed product of two molecules of sodium bisulfite. It appears as a white or yellowish crystalline powder with a strong, pungent sulfur dioxide (SO₂) odor. It is unstable in air, slowly oxidizing to sodium sulfate, and may cake upon moisture absorption. Its most important characteristic is the efficient release of sulfur dioxide gas upon contact with water, acid, or heat. This property makes it a highly effective reducing agent, bleaching agent, preservative, and antioxidant, playing a key role in numerous fields such as food, chemicals, water treatment, textiles, and mining.

Product Nature

  1. Physical Properties:
    · Appearance: White or yellowish crystals, granules, or powder.
    · Odor: Strong, pungent SO₂ odor.
    · Solubility: Freely soluble in water. The aqueous solution is acidic (due to formation of sodium bisulfite).
    · Density: Approx. 1.48 g/cm³.

  2. Chemical Properties:
    · Sulfur Dioxide Release: Reacts with water to form sodium bisulfite, releasing active SO₂. This is the basis for most of its applications.
    · Strong Reducing Property: Can reduce many oxidizing substances, itself being oxidized to sulfate.
    · Bleaching Action: Achieves bleaching by reducing and destroying chromophores.
    · Preservation & Antioxidant Effect: Inhibits microbial growth and scavenges oxygen to prevent oxidative spoilage in food.
    · Reaction with Chlorine: Effectively removes residual chlorine from water.

Product Usage

  1. Food Industry (Requires Food Grade):
    · Preservative, Antioxidant: Used for preservation and preventing browning in preserved fruits, dried fruits, dehydrated vegetables, fruit juices, wine, etc.
    · Bleaching Agent: Used for bleaching sugar, starch, vermicelli, biscuits, etc.

  2. Water Treatment:
    · Dechlorination Agent: Used to remove residual chlorine from industrial circulating water and treated wastewater, preventing its impact on downstream equipment or the environment.
    · Oxygen Scavenger: Used as an oxygen scavenger in systems like boiler feedwater.

  3. Chemical & Pharmaceutical Industries:
    · Reducing Agent: Used as a reducing agent in chemical synthesis.
    · Sulfonating Agent: Used in sulfonation reactions in the pharmaceutical industry.

  4. Textile Industry:
    · Bleaching Agent: Used for bleaching cotton, linen, etc.
    · Dechlorination Agent: Used to remove residual chlorine from fabrics after bleaching.

  5. Paper Industry:
    · Bleaching Agent: Used for pulp bleaching.

  6. Mining Industry:
    · Mineral Processing Agent: Used as a reducing agent in the cyanidation process for gold extraction.

Safety Matters

  1. Health Hazards:
    · Strongly irritating to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Its dust and released SO₂ gas can cause burns, inflammation, and asthma-like symptoms.
    · SO₂ is the primary hazard: Inhalation of high concentrations of SO₂ can cause severe respiratory damage, including pulmonary edema, and can be life-threatening.
    · NEVER store or mix with acids: Contact with acids produces large volumes of high-concentration SO₂ gas immediately, which is extremely hazardous.
    · Food-grade products must be used within regulated limits. Excessive residues may cause adverse reactions like allergies.

  2. Handling Protection:
    · Must be handled in a fume hood or with adequate local exhaust ventilation. Strictly prevent dust formation and inhalation.
    · Imperative to wear a respirator (for SO₂ and dust), chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and protective clothing.
    · Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the work area.
    · Wash thoroughly after handling.

  3. Storage & Transportation:
    · Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, dedicated warehouse away from heat and ignition sources. Strictly protect from moisture. Must be stored and transported separately from acids, oxidizers, strong alkalis, food, and feed. NEVER store or transport together.
    · Keep containers tightly closed.

  4. Fire Fighting:
    · Non-combustible itself, but can intensify fire (decomposes to release oxygen which supports combustion).
    · Use large quantities of water, foam, or dry chemical to extinguish fire.
    · Decomposes in fire or upon heating, releasing large amounts of toxic and irritating SO₂ gas. Firefighters must wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
