    · Hygroscopicity: Hygroscopic in air, absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide, leading to caking and formation of sodium bicarbonate.

    · Alkalinity: Aqueous solution is strongly alkaline (pH ≈ 11.5 for 1% solution). Reacts with acids in neutralization reactions.
    · Hydrolysis: Hydrolyzes in water to form sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate, resulting in an alkaline solution.
    · Reaction with Salts: Can react with certain calcium and magnesium salts to form insoluble carbonate precipitates, which is the basis for water softening.
