Sulfonated Lignite (SMC), commonly known as a high-temperature fluid loss reducer, is a drilling fluid additive produced by the sulfonation of natural lignite. It appears as a black or dark brown powder or granules. Its primary active component is sulfonated humic acid. The most prominent feature of SMC is its excellent high-temperature resistance, effectively controlling fluid loss under high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) conditions in deep and ultra-deep wells. It also functions as a thinner and dispersant, improving the rheological properties of drilling fluids at elevated temperatures and preventing excessive viscosity buildup. It is one of the key high-temperature additives for water-based drilling fluid systems.

This forms a hydrated adsorption layer, improving the coalescence stability of clay particles and maintaining good filter cake quality even at high temperatures, thereby controlling fluid loss. Its temperature resistance can typically reach 200°C (392°F) or higher.
    · Thinning & Dispersing Action: Can break down the "card house structure" formed by face-to-face association of clay particles under high temperature in the drilling fluid, thereby reducing the gel strength and viscosity and improving rheology.
    · Salt Tolerance: Possesses certain resistance to salt contamination.
    · Synergistic Effect: Often used in combination with other high-temperature resistant agents like Sulfonated Phenolic Resin (SMP) and sulfonated asphalt to create a synergistic effect, further enhancing the system's temperature tolerance.

  1. HTHP Fluid Loss Reducer (Primary Application): Serves as the primary fluid loss control agent in water-based drilling fluids (especially for deep and ultra-deep wells) to manage HTHP fluid loss and protect reservoir rocks.

  2. High-Temperature Thinner: Used at elevated temperatures to reduce the gel strength and viscosity of drilling fluids, maintaining good rheological properties and minimizing circulation pressure losses and surge/swab pressures.

  3. High-Temperature Stabilizer: Helps maintain the stability of drilling fluid properties after prolonged exposure to high-temperature cycling.

  4. Application Systems: Widely used in fresh water and brine drilling fluid systems. It is a key component of the "Three-Sulfonated" drilling fluid system (SMC, SMP, SMK).
