Product Information

Sodium Carboxymethy Cellulose (CMC) is a kind of anion polyelectrolytes, sodium chloroacetate with alkaline cellulose reaction,Have separately: HV-CMC、MV-CMC、LV-CMC and Alkaline of MV-CMC. As the white or pale yellow powder appearance,Non-toxic,Soluble in cold or hot water,as sticky colloid.

Sodium Carboxymethy Cellulose (CMC) is an anionic, linear polymer derived from the etherification of cellulose, commonly existing in its sodium salt form (Na-CMC). It appears as a white or slightly yellowish fibrous powder or granules, and is odorless and tasteless. It is readily soluble in water, forming a transparent, viscous colloidal solution that is neutral or slightly alkaline. Possessing various physico-chemical properties such as thickening, suspending, emulsifying, stabilizing, film-forming, and water retention, CMC is a crucial water-soluble cellulose ether. It is extensively used in dozens of industries including food, pharmaceuticals, daily chemicals, petroleum, textiles, and paper, earning it the nickname "MSG of Industry".

Product Nature

  1. Physical Properties:
    · Appearance: White or slightly yellowish fibrous powder or granules with good flowability.
    · Solubility: Soluble in cold or hot water, forming a transparent, viscous solution. Insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, acetone.
    · Hygroscopicity: Highly hygroscopic; equilibrium moisture content increases with environmental humidity.

  2. Chemical Properties:
    · Polyelectrolyte Nature: Its aqueous solution exhibits polyelectrolyte behavior. Viscosity is pH-dependent, most stable at pH 7-9.
    · Stability: Aqueous solutions are stable at room temperature. Prolonged heating at high temperatures causes viscosity loss. More resistant to microbial degradation than natural gums.
    · Compatibility: Compatible with most water-soluble gums, plasticizers, and resins. May form precipitates or gels upon contact with certain cations (e.g., Al³⁺, Fe³⁺).
    · Film-Forming Ability: Dries to form tough, transparent films.

Product Usage

Sodium Carboxymethy Cellulose (CMC) used for viscosity and reduces filtration of drilling fluid. It has the long molecular chain, can adsorption with multiple clay particles, increase the cementing properties of the mud cake, restrain the shale to hydrate and expansion, and consolidate the wall of the well. The water solution of CMC has many excellent properties and chemical stability, difficult to corrode and go bad, innocuous for physiological security, have the suspension effect and stable emulsification. Have well cohesive property and salt resistance. Good stability to oil and organic solvent. So, it widely used for oil, food, textile, pharmaceutical, papermaking and daily chemical industry, etc.

  1. Food Industry: Used as a thickener, stabilizer, suspending agent, humectant in ice cream, yogurt, beverages, jams, instant noodles, etc.

  2. Pharmaceutical Industry: Serves as a binder and sustained-release agent for tablets, a base for ointments, and a suspending agent for liquid drugs.

  3. Daily Chemical Industry: Used as a binder in toothpaste (providing body), thickener in shampoos and shower gels, and emulsion stabilizer in cosmetics.

  4. Oilfield Chemicals: Acts as a fluid loss reducer and viscosifier in water-based drilling fluids, effectively controlling fluid loss and stabilizing the wellbore.

  5. Textile & Dyeing: Used as a sizing agent and thickener for printing pastes.

  6. Paper Industry: Employed as a surface sizing agent to improve paper strength and grease resistance.

  7. Ceramic Industry: Functions as a green body strengthener to enhance the strength of unfired ceramics.

  8. Detergents: Serves as an anti-redeposition agent to prevent soil from re-adhering to fabrics.

Safety Matters

  1. Health Hazards:
    · Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade CMC are non-toxic and harmless to humans and are not absorbed by the body.
    · Industrial-grade CMC dust may cause mild irritation to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged inhalation of high dust concentrations may affect the respiratory system.

  2. Handling Protection:
    · When handling industrial-grade powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wear a dust mask and gloves to minimize dust exposure.
    · Wash hands thoroughly after handling.

  3. Storage & Transportation:
    · Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Strictly protect from moisture. Due to its high hygroscopicity, ensure packages are tightly sealed to prevent caking.
    · Store separately from toxic, hazardous, and strong-odour materials.
    · Food-grade CMC must be stored separately from industrial-grade products and comply with food hygiene regulations.

  4. Fire Fighting:
    · Combustible. Dust can form explosive mixtures with air.
    · Use water, foam, dry chemical, or CO2 to extinguish fire.
    · May decompose at high temperatures, producing fumes including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
